Employment - Rope Access

April 2016 – August 2017
Numerous and varied jobs with Vertex Access, High Access Solutions and Eurosafe, including: removal and replacement of restored church clock faces in Eyam, Derbyshire and Witney, Oxfordshire; rescue training from Millers Dale viaduct; survey work in several ventilation and mine shafts; pressure-washing parapets, balustrades and chimney stacks at Chatsworth House; mobile abseil anchor testing on apartments and offices; post-build glazing clean on accommodation blocks. Another long session (three months) rebuilding and re-pointing river walls on the Don with Carillion, as part of the Sheffield Flood Prevention project. I’ve also undertaken many photography jobs, capturing rope-access work for promotion and information.

January – October 2015
Repointing, repair and rebuilding of the River Don protection walls at sites throughout Sheffield. Also repaired and repointed several culverts beneath roads, both internally and externally. All work done as part of the Amey ‘Streets Ahead’’ program, working for Vertex Access.

May and July 2014
Repair and conservation work on the listed building Benham Vallance near Newbury, Berkshire. Rope-access, with re-pointing and stonework repair, painting and jet-washing tasks. Privately employed.

September 2013 – July 2014
Installation of dust-shedding solutions, painting and repair work at Drax Power Station in the new biomass plant, primarily in the rail unload building. Alternative/Vertex Rope Access.

July 2013
Installation of green wall at the Rubens at the Palace hotel, London, Alternative Access.

September 2012:
Waterproofing external roof masonry for private clients at the former Lodge Moor Hospital clock tower, Sheffield.
Peak Cavern, Castleton - rope-access installation and operation of lighting in the roof of the cave for The Vaccines rock concert.

May-August 2012:
Worked at Co-op Manchester Angel Square with Alternative Access Ltd., installing louvre blades and bird netting to the roof area to protect the air-conditioning plant, and fixing flashings and stairways to the parapet edge.

January-September 2012:
Installed and load-tested a variety of Latchways Mansafe fall-arrest systems and other access devices for Eurosafe Solutions Ltd., Sheffield. Projects included numerous construction sites, schools, hospitals, a new distillery, watchtower on Chester Walls and Olympia exhibition hall.

May 2005 - present:
Self-employed digital artist. Formed Heavy Everywhere Ltd. in 2005 to publish my photography and artwork, books and digital designs for fabric and other products. Also provide working-at-height services, photography, and consultancy. Registered owner of Heavy Everywhere® trademark.

July1999 - December 2004:
Worked for Lightwork Design Ltd., and then its offshoot company Kazoo 3D PLC, which later merged with ZOO Digital Group PLC (all in Sheffield), in a variety of roles in the 3D software/content sector.

July 1996 - January 1999:
Worked for Second Nature Industries as part of the 3-man development team of HyperMatter for 3D Studio MAX. This was a soft-object dynamics software plug-in for the industry-standard 3D animation package 3D Studio MAX® by Kinetix, and which won three industry awards in its first year of sale, including Computer Graphics World’s ‘Product of the Year’.

1992-1994:
Part-time lecturer in Computer Graphics, HND Design Diploma, Norton College, Sheffield.

1988-1996:
Received a Prince’s Trust grant to set up as a freelance computer artist and photographer. Created stills and animated work for many commercial projects, mainly album cover work, poster designs and video. Produced album cover designs for Cabaret Voltaire, 808 State, The Orb, The Shamen, Strictly Rhythm, Warp Records and many others.

1986-1987:
Part-time lecturer in darkroom practice and printing, HND Design Diploma, Castle College, Sheffield.

1983-1986:
No employment whilst taking BA Honours degree at Sheffield Hallam University.

1981-1982:
Assistant Art Technician, Rotherham College of Arts and Technology. Main responsibility was maintaining the Photography Studio and darkroom.

Relevant Employment Interests:

Enthusiastic caver and mine-explorer, working on many photographic survey, exploration and restoration projects in caves and disused Peak District lead mines. Comfortable with deep shaft descents/ascents, bolt installation (resin, throughbolt, screw-in), underground rope-access, working in confined spaces and aid-climbing. Currently working on a notable Castleton lead mine shaft-top repair and reconstruction in partnership with the National Trust.

Active member of the Technical Spelelogical Group in Castleton, the Peak District Mines Historical Society, the British Caving Association and the Derbyshire Caving Association.

Degree-qualified photographer. Proficient in all formats of camera from compact digital to large-format film, including working as an operator with the SpheroCam HDR 360° panoramic camera, for site surveying and luminance capture for computer graphics usage. I have also produced industrial/surface photography, retailing to computer graphics producers, for use as product backplates or as seamless texture-maps for 3D modelling. Experienced computer artist, proficient in Photoshop and 3D Studio MAX.
